More Shelters Open in Montgomery County for Residents Affected by Power Outages

Montgomery County shelters open at the following locations starting at 4 p.m. today:

1000 Forest Glen in Silver Spring


Longwood Center
19300 Georgia Ave, in Brookville/Olney. S


Richard Montgomery HS in Rockville remains open at
250 Richard Montgomery Drive.

County Opens Shelter for Residents Affected by Power Outages

Montgomery County officials announced today that a shelter is now open at Richard Montgomery High School for residents affected by power outages.

"We encourage residents to shelter in place if at all possible," said County Executive Isiah Leggett, "but we know that is not always possible.  We continue to work closely with our utilities to bring power back as quickly as possible to those affected by the widespread outages."

Individuals using the shelter should bring any medications or personal supplies thy require with them.
No pets are allowed at shelters except for registered service animals.

Richard Montgomery High School is located at 250 Richard Montgomery Drive in Rockville.

County officials are working to open additional shelters and will make further announcements as plans are made.

Power outages and snow problems continue in Montgomery

Unrelenting snow leaves thousands without power, cars

A total of 83,000 Montgomery County residents were without power as of 5 p.m. Saturday as one of the worst snowstorms in recent history blanketed the region. Police and emergency response officials were still battling the poor road conditions to provide service.

The majority of power outages in the area are due to the high volume of heavy, wet snowfall weighing down trees and branches, which in turn fall and crash power lines, causing outages, said Pepco spokesman Andre Francis. Due to the urgent need of residents without power in the heavy snowfall, every available Pepco crew had been mobilized to fix the problems and restore power quickly, Francis added.

"Usually what we do is we assess the problem and then go out and fix it, but what we're doing now is assessing the problem while we are out working on it, so we can't offer a definite timeline for when we can restore power to certain areas," Francis said.

Downed Trees and Power Outages Accompany Storm

A number of downed trees and multiple power outages have already been reported in Montgomery County -- the result of heavy, wet snow and wind associated with the major winter storm in the area.

To report downed trees on public property, residents should call the Storm Operations Center at 240-777-6000.

To report power outages, residents should contact their local power company:
